'Rumors' Review - by Terry Collins

When you direct a Neil Simon play you start from a good position, with the strength of the writing alone sure to garner laughs from the audience. But without a top-notch cast, furious pace and fine direction, even the wittiest of Simon’s scripts can fail to deliver fully.

Fortunately, Woy Woy Little Theatre’s production of Rumors  is a triumph of casting and direction, with the laughs flowing freely. Director Shea Wicks has set a cracking pace which accelerates as the farcical elements build to an hilarious crescendo in Act II.

Staging is impressive, with a pleasing set cleverly designed to allow maximum viewing pleasure, not always easy to achieve given the seating arrangements in the Peninsula Theatre. From my seat at the very furthest extremity of stage right I was able to see all the action.

Andrew Thomson leads a stellar cast as Lenny – his monologue in Act II will surely go down as one of the most memorable comic performances to grace the WWLT stage. He is superbly matched by Blair Cunningham as his wife Clair. This actress is all class and has a delightful stage presence – keep your eye on her in future productions.

As  Ken and Chris Gorman, Paul Karton (returning to the stage after a break of some years) and Kim Kelly set just the right frenetic pace in the opening scene and are solid throughout. Woy Woy favourite Sierra Phillips revels in her role as the eccentric Cookie and Scott Goodacre is especially impressive as her husband.

Loved Luke Kaalim and Adriana Nunez as Glen and Cassie; had not seen either of these performers before and thoroughly enjoyed their pace-perfect depiction of the bickering couple. David Wicks shines in Act II – great to see David back on the stage - and newcomer Flynn Edwards cuts his teeth for the company with a minor role.

The script is funny, the cast is solid with nary a weak link to be found, and the direction is tight and hard to fault. If you want a rollicking night of comic theatre sure to have you laughing off the winter blues – this is it.
